Oscar Wilde once wrote, “What difference is there between a glass of absinthe and a sunset?”.
Made of Wormwood, Thujone, Anise, fennel, air, Melissa, liquorice, Angelica and other herbs, Absinthe has been bewitching people for more than 200 years.
It was discovered just like all good things are — by accident. At the end of the eighteenth century, Pierre Ordinaire, a French doctor distilled wormwood and other herbs in an alcoholic base as a remedy for his patients, and voila, he ended up inventing the ‘Green Fairy’ instead.
Commercially, Absinthe had begun to be produced in 1797, when a man named Major Dubied bought the recipe from Dr. Ordinaire and proceeded to manufacture the spirit. And the rest is history!
The “traditional Absinthe service” involves using a massive glass container filled with ice water. Think about the containers you might serve lemonade out of at a party, and then having it slow drip over a sugar cube that’s sitting on top of your glass.
Great men like Edgar Degas, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin submerged themselves into the mystique of the ‘green seductress’. In fact, Ernest Hemingway went as far as having a cocktail created as a signature drink that paired absinthe with champagne. Hemingway has got my vote!
Just like everything popular eventually has, there are a lot of myths surrounding Absinthe. To make things clear, Absinthe doesn’t lead to hallucinations and neither did it originate from the Czech Republic as it’s believed to be. Also, it isn’t illegal, people. Though the colour depends on multiple factors, the traditional green comes from chlorophyll in the herbs used to make the alcohol. It is also available in red and caramel tones.
Absinthe, at the end of the day is an acquired taste. People either hate it or love it. For those of you who love it with a fanatical devotion similar to mine, here are few awesome Absinthe-based cocktails which are a must-try-once before you die!
