A sealing drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi shut down more than 50 shops and restaurants in South Delhi’s Defence Colony market and Chattarpur on Friday, 22 December 2017. The commercial units operating on the first and second floor of these shops and restaurants have been sealed for not depositing the conversion charges as per provisions in the city’s Master Plan 2021.
Defence Colony market was earlier known as a shopping-cum-residential complex. The ground floor was meant for commercial activities and the above floors for residential purpose. The Master Plan 2021 called for Defence Colony Market to be termed as a local shopping centre. The owners of the first and second floors were allowed to open commercial units in these floors, provided they deposit a one-time payment of conversion charges at the rate of Rs. 89,000 per sq. meter.
The non-complying establishments operating off of commercial units located on the first floor and above didn’t submit the conversion charges and were hence sealed. Some of these include your favourite eating outlets like Moets, Social, Aka Saka and 4S among others.
