Peel an orange or drink a glass of fresh orange juice instead of lighting a cigarette. Its smell distracts your senses, and fends off the urge that lasts only 3-5 minutes. Fruits like amla, orange, guava and lemon fill in the vitamin C that cigarettes deprive you of.

Foods like raisins, figs, spinach, whole-grain breads, pastas, millet, quinoa, brown rice, almonds and starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn keep nicotine circulating in your body. This reduces the need to consume any more nicotine because of the presence of the already high levels of the addictive stuff in your system. Besides, the fragrance of dry fruits lower cravings.

Tomatoes and tobacco plant, believe it or not, come from the same plant family. Hence, tomato juice gives you the same effect that cigarettes do—except that, it reduces the harmful effects, and gives benefits instead! Besides, the scent of tomatoes reduces the appeal of cigarettes.

Drink water every time you feel the urge to smoke. Not only does it make cigarettes taste awful, it also calms you and helps to get over the touchiness that comes with smoking cessation. Splashing your face with water, swimming or dipping your feet—all can be major crave busters.

If you drink milk before smoking, the after taste won’t let you finish your cigarette because of the sick bitter taste it’ll leave in your mouth. Any dairy products, for that matter will have the same effect.

Just putting salt on the tip of your tongue or tasting pickle can put your craving at bay. Better still, you can munch some salty items like chips.
